The 21-year-old midfielder, Palmer scored to equalize for Man City during the Uefa Super Cup final on Wednesday. City would go on to down Sevilla in the penalty shootout and emerge winners.

Speaking to Omasports after the match in Athens, Palmer, who also scored for City in the Community Shield final against Arsenal two weeks ago, said: “We are really happy to win the trophy. That’s why we came. The stakes in this competiton are high – you have to fight for your place. I got the opportunity and I took it.”

Palmer joined the senior team from the U-21 in 2021. Last season, he started only two Premier League games. When asked if his performance will make the youth team players earn the respect and confidence of manager Pep Guardiola, he noted that he believes many players in the academy can come into the first team.

Playmaker Kevin De Bruyne is currently sidelined with injury and while Palmer acknowledges the gulf in experience and quality, he hopes that he make a good account of himself in the absence of the Belgian.

“Hopefully, if I get the chance, I can show what I can do. But with the level of De Bruyne, I don’t know to be honest.”
