Nigeria’s Super Falcons defeated Costa Rica 1-0 in the wee hours of Wednesday morning to salvage some dignity in their final match of the inaugural Revelations Cup.
The nine-time African champions had previously lost 1-0 to Mexico, and also to Colombia.
Esther Okoronkwo’s goal was enough to hand the Falcons victory thereby halting what had been a 7-game losing streak for the Nigerian team under the tutelage of coach Randy Waldrum.
Okoronkwo’s goal came in the 45th minute following a cross into the box from Onyinye Echegini, and she hit a rasping shot into the top corner.

The win ensured some degree of respectability in a disappointing outing for the Falcons at the tourney.
It should be noted that the Super Falcons were without 5-time African female footballer of the year Asisat Oshoala for this competition.
Nigeria has been pitted in Group B of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, alongside Co-host Australia, the Republic of Ireland, and Canada.
