Chelsea manager Graham Potter has admitted fortune appears to be against the Blues after their controversy-laden 1-1 draw with West HamAMP on Saturday.

Joao Felix and Kai Havertz both had goals ruled out for offside by VAR in a first half which saw the former legally open the scoring before Emerson Palmieri came back to bite his former employers with an equaliser.

Declan Rice was also caught offside by the VAR late on but the biggest drama came as Tomas Soucek handled the ball in the penalty area in the dying embers of the game – an incident which neither the on-field official nor the VAR were remotely interested in.

Asked about what looked like an ‘obvious’ handball call, Potter told BT Sport: “Yeah, looks it.

“These are the things you need to go in your favour, and at the moment, they’re not. But that’s life, nothing to complain about there. We have to keep working.

“There were positives in terms of how we wanted to play today, some good attacking moments with players who are adapting to the Premier League, so we have to keep moving forward.”

Rather than criticise the decision, Potter chose to praise Chelsea for what he felt was an improved performance from his side.

“I thought you could see positives in the performance, especially the first half,” he added. “It was a step forward for us in terms of the previous game. Lots to go forward with.

“We’re in a process of getting guys up to speed, getting match minutes, so the ability to be able to sustain what we want to do is the challenge for us, but there were positives in the game.”
