Burkina Faso edged Gabon on penalties 7-6 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon on Sunday.
The Stallions were close to securing the win in regulation time after Bertrand Traore put them ahead in the 28th minute, but Gabon equalised in stoppage through an Adama Guira own goal to send the game into extra time.
Both teams kept it level through extra time to force the first penalty shootout of this year’s event.
With scores at 6-6, Gabon missed consecutive kicks leaving Ismahila Ouedraogo to covert and send his side into the next stage.
Burkina Faso will face either Nigeria or Tunisia for a place in the semifinals.
