Manchester City defeated Club Brugge 4-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday night to end a two-game winless run.

City came into the match on the back of two consecutive defeats, in the EFL Cup to West Ham and the Premier League to Crystal Palace, but made a return to winning ways in fine style.

Phil Foden scored in the 15th minute but a John Stones’ own goal restored parity.

Club Brugge, who lost 5-1 to City two weeks ago, would fall behind again after Riyad Mahrez struck in the 54th minute. City then stretched their lead through Raheem Sterling, with the Englishman scoring four minutes after he was subbed on. Gabriel Jesus capped off the win with a goal in stoppage time.

Sterling is now the fourth highest scoring English player in the Champions League, with 22 goals, with Wayne Rooney (30), Paul Scholes (24) and Frank Lampard (23) the top three.

The win sent the Premier League club into first place in Group A after PSG drew 2-2 with RB Leipzig.

The French giants were without Lionel Messi – who scored a brace against this same side two weeks ago – and were headed for a full-time win before Dominik Szoboszlai converted from the penalty spot in injury time to snatch a point for Leipzig.

PSG are second in the group with 8 points, while Club Brugge are third (4 points) with Leipzig (1 point) bottom.

City now require a single point from their remaining two group games to seal a spot in the last 16 for the ninth successive season.
