Taiwo Awoniyi will have to continue his wait for a call-up to the Nigerian national team, after Gernot Rohr released his squad list for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers coming up in September.

Awoniyi’s name was missing from the complete squad list despite his impressive performances in club football.

The 22-year-old striker has been in superb form for Union Berlin in the German Bundesliga this season. He’s already registered four goals and two assists in four competitive games and looks primed to continue scoring.

Awoniyi has been in fine form for Union Berlin this season.

The youngster joined Union Berlin in July on a permanent deal after impressing on a loan spell last season in Liverpool.

Fans have been clamouring for his call to the national team after he rediscovered his mojo, but their hopes have been dashed as his name was left out of the list, which was released by the Nigeria Football Federation on Thursday.

The Super Eagles will begin their 2022 World Cup qualifiers next month.
