Following Arsenal’s disappointing 2–0 loss to newly-promoted Brentford in the Premier League on Friday, Rwanda’s President, Paul Kagame expressed his disappointment over the result in a rather surprising rant on Twitter.

Arsenal got their 2021/2022 Premier League season underway with a trip to Brentford on Friday. After finishing eighth last season, there were hopes that Mikel Arteta and his charges will step up and lay down an early marker this season. However, it was Brentford who got off to a flying start, leaving Arsenal fans, including President Kagame, feeling despondent.

As an ardent supporter of the club, Kagame let loose on social media, saying, the fans do not deserve what they’ve been getting.

“What?? It’s football. It’s a loss of Arsenal at/to Brentford. Brentford deserved to win and they did. The game itself aside, Arsenal and the fans don’t deserve to kind of get used to this….NO!!! I say this as one of the big fans of Arsenal. The change has taken too long to come!,” the 63-year-old East African President tweeted.

We just must NOT excuse or Accept mediocrity. A team has to be built with purpose to win win win. So that when we lose….it was not to be expected! I am sure we all know on whose shoulders the heaviest burden rests. I hope they know too or even accept it!!! End

Arsenal last won the Premier League in the 2003/2004 season. Since then, the club has struggled to reach its previous heights. Last season’s eighth-place finish was their worst in decades. Kagame expressed frustration about how the club has been managed.

“It’s been a struggle of about decade(s),” the President continued. “Ups & downs-more downs until this point. Can’t we have a plan that really works?? One part to look at is how we deal in the market- players we buy to execute the plan. The touch & go mentality does not bring change,” he stated.

Kagame went on to charge fans of the club not to accept mediocrity, adding that those in charge of the club should shoulder the burden.

“We just must NOT excuse or accept mediocrity. A team has to be built with purpose to win win win. So that when we lose, it was not to be expected! I am sure we all know on whose shoulders the heaviest burden rests. I hope they know too or even accept it!!! End.”

It was a good start to life for Brentford in the Premier League and they will look to build on that result. Arsenal, meanwhile, have plenty of work to do. The Gunners face Chelsea next before travelling to the Etihad to face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. It remains to be seen if Arteta can turn things around.
