Former Eaglets Coach Emmanuel Amuneke
Former Golden Eaglets manager Emmanuel Amuneke has revealed an incident when he dropped his own brother from the Eaglets squad because he is not good enough to compete and help the team.
Amuneke made this known during an Instagram Live Chat with Sunday Oliseh while talking about the happenings in Nigerian football and how administrators can improve decisions regarding football development in Nigeria.
“I have a brother, he was the goalkeeper then at the U17 squad,” he said. “One day I called my assistant [Emeka Amadi] and asked him how he honestly sees my brother, ‘would he help the team?’ and he said ‘no, he’s not going to help.’ I told him to drop him.
“He was dropped and everyone was like how would I drop my brother. He’s my brother but if football is not his path, I stand in a position to correct him, to let him know if football is not his way and if he has to opt for a different career path.”
Amuneke coached the Golden Eaglets to World title in 2015 in Chile in a year that produced stars like Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Kelechi Nwakali and others.
He was the assistant to Manu Garba when the Eaglets triumphed in UAE two years earlier with the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Taiwo Awoniyi and goalkeeper Dele Alampasu.
