Premier League CEO Richard Masters has announced that the coronavirus pandemic would have cost Premier League clubs about €2.3bn by the end of the season.
The league was suspended about a year ago when the coronavirus was ravaging the world and resumed three months later under strict health guidelines and with no fans in the stadium.
“There have been very significant financial losses, not just in the Premier League but throughout the football pyramid,” Masters said.
“Towards the end of this season, we’ll get towards €2.3 billion lost since the start of the pandemic in match day revenue and broadcast revenue.”
The league is expected to have fans back from the final weeks of the season and fully as from next season with the UK planning to have vaccinated all its citizens by the end of July.
La Liga chief Javier Tebas announced last month that Spanish clubs would lose up to €2bn in revenue due to the pandemic and also announced new wage limits for clubs with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid the most affected.
