Chelsea were heavily involved in the summer transfer market with the acquisition of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz, Edouard Mendy and free signings of Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr.
Chelsea started the season brightly and were top of the league table in December, won their Champions League group before they lost form and went on a losing streak which eventually led to the departure of Frank Lampard.
Thomas Tuchel, who was sacked by PSG in December was brought in to take charge and remains unbeaten, has won five games in a row spare for a draw in his first match against Wolves, a match he had just a training session to prepare for.
Tuchel led PSG to their first Champions League final last season, losing 1-0 to Hansi Flick’s Bayern Munich, the same man has identified the potential of Tuchel’s new squad ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League round of 16 match against Atletico Madrid and is backing them to go far in the Champions League.
‘‘Chelsea have massive potential both in terms of quality and quantity. It’s a young team with a lot of talent. They can go far in the Champions League this season,’’ Flick told France Football.
‘‘Thomas [Tuchel] has gained experience at PSG that will benefit him at Chelsea. He’s ready for this challenge.’’
Tuchel has orchestrated Chelsea’s rise on the EPL table to fourth and also beat Barnsley to reach the FA Cup quarterfinals where they would face Sheffield United.
