Superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were sent packing from the FIFA World Cup after their respective teams were eliminated in the first knock out round of the global showpiece.

The Albiceleste lost by 4 – 3 to Les Blues, courtesy Kylian Mbappe, while only a few hours later Edison Cavani upstaged Ronaldo by scoring twice to hand Uruguay a deserving 2 – 1 victory. Messi and Ronaldo would have face each other if they managed to negotiate their way successfully into the quarter – finals, but both their opponents weren’t having any of it. Elimination from the tournament will leave these two superstars considering what the future holds, as they are both at ages were they might not be able to contribute meaningfully to their national sides going forward.

Ronaldo and Messi have been the world’s stand out players in over a decade, but will now leave the World Cup having not made significant impact on the tournament. Uruguay will face France in the next round of what is without a doubt the most intriguing FIFA World Cup ever.
