Toronto FC woes continue after sixth consecutive defeat, 4-0 to Columbus Crew
Columbus Crew showed why they are champions with a dominant 4-0 win against Toronto FC on Saturday night in the Major League Soccer.
Toronto had no answers to Columbus Crew as they were reduced to just three shots on target in 90 minutes.
From the first whistle, Columbus showed their intention with attacking play and goal-scoring opportunities. They got their reward in the 15th minute when Cucho Hernandez headed in from a corner kick. A second goal in similar fashion was disallowed by VAR on the stroke of halftime, sparing Toronto from an even worse result before the break.
In the second half, Columbus got their second goal in the 52nd minute after good work by Cucho Hernandez to set up Cristian Ramirez for the finish. Toronto fell apart, and in the final minutes of the match, Columbus Crew scored two more goals: Mohamed Farsi in the 81st minute and Diego Rossi in the 84th minute.
It was a disappointing night for Toronto and they looked like a depleted team, low in confidence. The frustration was obvious among the players with every misplaced pass and uninspiring movement on and off the ball. Columbus capitalized on their poor display to deliver the goals and points.
Columbus Crew’s latest win is their fourth straight win and eighth in the last nine matches.
Toronto FC are now winless in nine games. They have now lost six consecutive games, and suffered 13 defeats in 23 matches this season.
“Our time will come. It’ll turn,” John Herdman told reporters after the game. “You look at the reality of the squad depth, we’re thin. We are pushing guys across many games. Not much opportunity for rotation,” he added. “And if we fall behind in a game like tonight against a good team, it’s going to be an uphill battle.
“But I thought they did battle. And that’s important.” Herdman concluded.
It does not get easy for Toronto as they have tough matches coming up. Their next match is against Philadelphia Union on July 13. Then they play three away matches in a row: Inter Miami, CF Montreal, Houston Dynamo on July 17, 20 and August 20 respectively.
Columbus Crew will travel to Los Angeles to face Los Angeles FC on July 13.
