Bayer Leverkusen’s midfielder Granit Xhaka has said returning to Germany is one of the best decisions he’s made in his life.

The Swiss midfielder told Omasports in an exclusive chat following Leverkusen’s Bundesliga triumph at the Bay Arena on Sunday.

The former Borussia Mochengladbach player left Arsenal to join Bayer Leverkusen in July last year after 7 years at the Emirates – a move he’s now very grateful for.

”I am very thankful to be here,” the 31-year-old said. “Thankful to the board and the coach who did everything to bring me back to Germany. But as well my decision. I think it was one of the best decisions of my life to come back here and try to win something with this amazing club.”

Xhaka is quite famous and loved in Nigeria – and the feelings were pronounced after his humble gesture towards his teammate’s – Victor Boniface – mom, when she visited the Bay Arena earlier in the season.

The Swiss said he understands and is able to relate with the African culture because of the environment he grew up in.

”I grew up with a lot of African people. One of my best friends is African. In Basel, you have a lot of Africans as well.

”I love the culture, I love the mentality. I love how kind they are to other people. For me, it is the same. We grew up like this, with a lot of respect.

“Boniface is a great guy and has a great family as well. This club is special because you can see the families here. They have the chance to enjoy the moment with us.”
