Domenico Tedesco, a former manager of Spartak Moscow, RB Leipzig, and Schalke, has been named the head coach of Belgium.

The 37-year-old, who was born in Italy but has dual citizenship with Germany, has a contract that lasts through the conclusion of the 2024 European Championship.

He takes over for Roberto Martinez, who retired after six years in charge following Belgium’s World Cup group-stage defeat in Qatar.

“It is a great honour to be the new head coach of Belgium,” said Tedesco.

“I’m really looking forward to the task and I’m extremely motivated. I had a very good feeling right from the first conversation.”

Tedesco’s first match in charge is a Euro 2024 qualifier against Sweden in Stockholm on 24 March.

He joins a Belgian team that is hoping to improve after a very poor showing in Qatar.

The Red Devils finished third at the 2018 Euros. Being the second-ranked team before the World Cup, however they were eliminated from the tournament after just one win and one goal in three games.

Martinez, a former manager of Swansea, Wigan, and Everton, resigned as soon as his team was eliminated from the World Cup, although he has since been selected Portugal’s head coach.
