Eric Abidal has begged for his wife’s forgiveness on Instagram after his apparent affair with attack victim Kheira Hamraoui was exposed by French police.
Police investigating an attack on Hamraoui earlier this month discovered messages between Abidal and the PSG Women star.
This led his wife, Hayet, to announce in a press release on Friday that she intends to file for divorce after 14 years of marriage after he had admitted “to an adulterous relationship with Ms Hamraoui”.
Abidal has now taken to social media to beg for his wife’s forgiveness as he tries to save his marriage to the mother of his five children.
In a post on Instagram, Abidal accompanied an image of him looking solemn and upset with the caption: “Hayet Abidal forgive me.
“Whatever your decision, you will remain in my eyes the woman of my life, and especially the mother of our wonderful children.
“I deserve this humiliation even though it kills me alive. Thank God that God’s will, one day you will forgive me.”
The couple got married in 2007 and have five children together.
French police are now set to question both of them as they continue their investigation into the attack on Hamraoui.
The French international was pulled from her car in Paris earlier this month and attacked by two masked men.
Police originally arrested her PSG and France teammate Aminata Diallo before later releasing her due to insufficient evidence.
Former Barcelona defender Abidal retired from playing in 2015 following a 15-year career that saw him win two Champions Leagues as well as league titles in Spain, France and Greece.
He returned to the Camp Nou in 2018 as the club’s sporting director but left his role after two years in August 2020.
