News of Manchester United’s contract renewal was followed by the club losing a preseason friendly match on Saturday to QPR.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has signed a new deal with the club until 2024, with an option for a further year.

The Norwegian, 48, took over permanently in March 2019, having been put in interim charge when Jose Mourinho departed three months earlier.

The news of Solskjaer’s contract renewal was however not enough to galvanize his lads as they fell 4-2 to QPR in a pre-season friendly at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium in London.

The visitors went into the break level after Jesse Lingard’s opener was cancelled out by Charlie Austin.

A Lyndon Dykes double and a long-range stunner from Moses Odubajo saw QPR go 4-1 up in the second half, as they scored three times in seven minutes.

Teenager Anthony Elanga, 19, stroked in a consolation goal for United late on.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has justsigned a new deal keeping him at United until 2024, fielded a young side led by fringe players such as Juan Mata and Dan James, with many senior players still unavailable after international duty.

The Reds were also without Brazilian left-back Alex Telles, who is likely to miss the start of the season with an ankle injury, or new £73m signing Jadon Sancho.

The news of Solskjaer’s new deal follows the confirmation of the club signing England winger Jadon Sancho for £73m from Borussia Dortmund.

“Everyone knows the feeling I have for this club,” said Solskjaer.

“It is an exciting time for Manchester United. We have built a squad with a good balance of youth and experienced players that are hungry for success.

“I have a fantastic coaching team around me and we are all ready to take that next step on our journey.

“Manchester United wants to be winning the biggest and best trophies and that’s what we are all striving for. We have improved, both on and off the pitch, and that will continue over the coming seasons.”
