Former Senegalese midfielder Pape Bouba Diop has died at the age of 42 after a long illness reported to be Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

Diop is best remembered for scoring the goal that beat France 1-0 in the opener of the 2002 World Cup.

He played for the Teranga Lions 63 times and scored 11 goals. He also played for clubs like Portsmouth, Birmingham, Fulham and West Ham.
