Chelsea defender, Fikayo Tomori has said he had no choice but to accept England’s callup when it came in, because they were the only team that invited him. Tomori revealed this to Omasports after the Blues’ lone goal victory over Ajax in Amsterdam on Wednesday.
He said he feels proud to be Nigerian always and thought about whom to represent for one or two years, but his choice was natural because the Three Lions were the only team that showed interest in his international allegiance.
On how proud he felt to be called by the English national team, Tomori said: ”I just wanted to go as far as I can and that also involves playing for the national team. ”It was a difficult choice for me. It was something I had to think about for a year or two and I was previously at the U-21 Euros, so I wasn’t thinking too far ahead, but then there was a lot of talk and questions and I had to make a decision. ”England called me up in September, and I didn’t get a call up from anyone when they called me up, it was hard to say no to them.”
The defender also talked about his mercurial rise from the second cadre of English football – the championship to the biggest stage of European football, the Champions League.
”It’s crazy, Tammy, Mason, Reece James and I always talk about the lift from the Championships to the Champions League. We were all on the same level last season and playing against teams like Ajax, coming to stadiums like this now; it’s a dream.”
Tomori was also asked if he saw Wizkid’s Star Boy Fest at the O2 Arena, London, he said he missed it because he had to rest after a gruelling game against Newcastle. ”I didn’t see Wizkid at the O2 Arena. I had to rest after the Newcastle game. My friends did and they enjoyed themselves. ”I enjoy Nigerian music, I’m Nigerian, it’s my culture and I’m very proud of it. I enjoy the food too -pounded yam and jollof especially.”
