Friday’s CAF Champions League final promises to be a historic occasion as Africa’s two fiercest rivals come face-to-face at the Cairo International Stadium.

Zamalek and Al Ahly, the two most successful club sides in Egyptian history, will meet for the 239th edition of the Cairo Derby, a rivalry that dates back over a century and inspires fervent support within the Arabic-speaking world.

Zamalek, the designated home side, will be looking to end an 18-year wait for a sixth Champions League title, while Al Ahly hope to be crowned African champions for a record ninth time.

Both teams stamped their tickets to the final with resounding semi final victories over Moroccan opposition, with the White Knights beating Raja Casablanca 4-1 on aggregate, and the Reds dispatching of Wydad Casablanca 5-1 over two legs.

The 2020 continental showdown will be the first time since the CAF Champions League began in 1965 that the trophy will be decided in a winner-takes-all game, instead of the usual home-and-away leg format.
