Steven Gerrard has led Rangers to a record 55th Scottish Premiership title, their first since 2011 after Celtic were held to a goalless draw at Dundee United.

Rangers are 20 points ahead of Old Lady rivals Celtic and beat St Mirren 3-0 on Saturday and a draw by Celtic which means it is mathematically impossible to catch them hands the title to Steven Gerrard’s side.

The club issued a statement to celebrate their record title:

“After a superb campaign so far, Gers’ win over St Mirren yesterday put them on the verge of glory, with results elsewhere today meaning they can mathematically no longer be caught, with incredibly six matches still to play.

“It’s title number 55 for the club – the most of any football club in the world – and the first in 10 years following one of the most arduous decades in the club’s history.”

In 2012, Rangers were demoted to the fourth tier of Scottish football  due to a financial crisis and have now worked their way back up and are champions.

Nigerian duo of Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun are part of the championship winning squad and have taken to Twitter to celebrate.
