Six La Liga clubs begin season without shirt sponsors due to gambling ban

Six of La Liga’s top division teams are kick-staring their season without a shirt sponsor following the introduction of a law that bans betting sponsors on the front of kits in Spanish football.

The clubs are Granada, Real Sociedad, Alaves, RCD Mallorca, Cadiz and Levante. They are now without a headline shirt sponsor. Sadly, they failed to diversify their partnership early on.

A ban on gambling sponsorships was announced by the Government of Spain in October, citing the negative influence betting brands have on society’s most vulnerable as the reason.

It was reported that the UK government would follow suit and introduce their own ban earlier this year, but that’s yet to be introduced.

Gambling sponsorships in the UK earn clubs more than £40 million every year and over 50% of clubs have sponsorships with gambling brands.

These clubs will now seek to find better ways to drive revenue.
