Nigerian and LOSC Lille attacker, Victor Osimhen’s UEFA Champions League debut fell short of his expectations, as his French team succumbed 3-0 to Ajax Amsterdam at the Amsterdam Arena.

A disappointed Osimhen, who sold newspapers on Nigerian highways, just a couple years ago said it will be too early to condemn the team, as they will restrategise, analyse their mistakes and play better against Chelsea.

In a chat with omasports after the game, Osimhen said the stage is high and they didn’t do well enough against a very organised Ajax team. ‘This is the height of all competitions, because the Champions league is every player’s dream and when you play, you want to give your all, and be on top of your game but tonight, we played against a very organised team and when you play such teams, you don’t want to make lots of mistakes, and when you get opportunities, you need to score them but football is what it is. We have to go back to improve,” he said. On coming with a better performance against Chelsea, who lost at home in their first game to Valencia. Osimhen said: ”We’ll go back to look at our mistakes and we will improve against Chelsea, give our all to win, as this is a lesson for us all. We will try to correct it against Chelsea and get a win.”

On playing in the UCL, he said; ”It’s a great feeling for me, I’ve been dreaming about this competition and I watch football every time. And to come to this place to play, I’m in one of the biggest stadia in the world and against a very organised team like Ajax, I would have been happy to get a win and a goal but I’ll go back, learn more and hopfully score in the next game.” Osimhen said he is not getting carried away by his exploits in the French Ligue 1 and said the success of the team matters more.

He however disclosed that he has a personal target that he knows with consistency, will be reached.

”The team has a target. Not just me. We will go back to check our mistakes and come out strong against a difficult Chelsea. With our fans behind us, we will get a positive result and I’ll get among the goals.” ”I set a standard for myself, I have a personal target which I try to meet. I’m a team player, I go on the pitch to help my team. Maybe I’m not there yet, I know consistency is key and I think I’ll be able to do it.”
