Borussia Monchengladbach head coach Marco Rose will leave the club at the end of the season and take charge of rivals Borussia Dortmund.

“In the past few weeks, we have held a lot of discussions with Marco about his future. Unfortunately, Marco has decided that he would like to exercise a clause in his contract, which was due to expire in June 2022, and move to Borussia Dortmund in the summer,” said Borussia’s sporting director Max Eberl.

“Therefore, Marco will no longer be available to us after the end of the season should the conditions set out in his contract be met on time. Until then, we will do everything in our power together with Marco to achieve this season’s goals in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League.”

Rose will take over from interim manager Edin Terzić who replaced the sacked Lucien Favre but is struggling to turn the club’s fortunes around and are at a risk of missing out on the UEFA Champions League next season, a situation that will make it difficult to keep top stars like Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho.

Rose joined Gladbach in 2019 and has turned the club around, into a club competing in Europe. They face an uphill task in the Champions League round of 16 where they face Pep Guardiola’s Man City.
