AC Milan have sacked Paolo Maldini, their technical director and former captain, following his five-year tenure. Maldini played a pivotal role in Milan’s triumph in the Serie A in 2022, securing their first league title in 11 years.

The team’s performance this season saw them finish fourth in Serie A and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they were ultimately defeated by their rivals, Inter Milan.

In a club statement, Milan expressed their gratitude to Maldini, stating, “We thank him for his years of service, contributing to the return to the Champions League and to winning the Scudetto.”

Throughout his tenure as technical director, Maldini played a crucial part in the acquisition of key players such as Rafael Leao, Theo Hernandez, Fikayo Tomori, and Olivier Giroud.

The statement further mentioned that Maldini’s day-to-day responsibilities would be assumed by a team working closely with the first-team manager.

Paolo Maldini, who spent his entire illustrious playing career with AC Milan, made 901 appearances for the club and won 26 trophies, including seven Serie A titles and five European Cup/Champions League crowns.

His father, Cesare, is also revered as a legend at Milan, having featured 467 times for the club before managing them for a two-year period. Maldini’s son, Daniel, is currently part of Milan’s squad but spent the previous season on loan at Spezia.
