Real Madrid beat Frankfurt to claim 2022 Uefa Super Cup

Spanish champions Real Madrid began the new season on a fine note by beating Frankfurt 2-0 to claim the Uefa Super Cup in Finland on Wednesday night.

The Uefa Super Cup is contested for by the year’s Champions League and Europa League winners and it was Madrid who prevailed on the night, thanks to goals from David Alaba and Karim Benzema.

Alaba gave Madrid the lead in the first half before Benzema doubled it with his 324th goal for the club.

The Frenchman, 34, is now Real Madrid’s second-highest goalscorer in history, overtaking Raul but behind Cristiano Ronaldo, who hit 450 during nine seasons at the club.

For Carlo Ancelotti, it’s a record 4th Uefa Super Cup win as manager.

Madrid will now turn their attention to domestic football as they prepare to take on Almeria in their 2022/2023 La Liga opener this weekend.
