“I knew I could do more,” Real forward Benzema says game & ambition now on different level

Real Madrid star forward Karim Benzema has said he knew he could ‘do more’ following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from the Spanish side.

Ronaldo left Madrid in 2018 after nine seasons at the club, where he holds the record for most goals scored in their history. Throughout his time in Madrid, the spotlight was mostly on him, with Benzema in the shadows.

However, since the Portuguese’s exit, Benzema has reached new heights. Last season, the Frenchman helped Madrid to La Liga and Champions League glory, finishing as the highest goalscorer in both tourneys.

He’s been tipped by many for this year’s Ballon d’Or and says his ‘game and ambitions’ are now on a different level.

“It’s true I’ve scored more goals but when CR7 was here we had a different style,” Benzema told Omasports in a press conference ahead of Wednesday’s Uefa Super Cup meeting between Madrid and Frankfurt in Finland.

“I provided more assists and he helped me on and off the pitch. I knew I could do more [at the time] and when he left it was the time to change my game and ambitions, I’m doing that at the moment.”

Benzema scored 15 goals in the Champions League last season as Madrid powered to the title – a record 14th for the club. Only Ronaldo has scored more in the elite competition.
