Plenty of praise & respect for Nigeria’s Calvin Bassey after Europa League final

Rangers defender Calvin Bassey has been showered with encomiums following a stunning display on one of European football’s biggest stages.

Bassey produced a stellar performance for Rangers against Frankfurt in the Europa League final on Wednesday night in Seville.

Despite Frankfurt going on to edge the decider on penalties, Bassey, who’s only 22, has been praised for “showing maturity beyond his years.”

Bassey, viewed as a weak link in the Scottish side after joining from Leicester less than two years ago, has gone on to become one of the club’s most prized assets.

Against Frankfurt, the Nigerian won seven of his 11 duels, four of his five aerially, won possession back nine times, and made three interceptions. As he had all through the tournament, he brought his athleticism and sheer strength to the fore on the night, in a supremely-charged atmosphere.

Former Manchester United and England midfielder Owen Hargreaves said on BT Sport:

“Calvin Bassey, my word, what a performance. That was astonishing, the energy and effort. Everything about his game was fantastic. Anyone watching that will be thinking: ‘That’s the kind of player I want in my team’.”

Former Rangers striker Mark Hateley said on BBC Scotland’s Sportsound: “Bassey has come so far, so quickly.

“He’s established himself as a centre-half, wing-back, full-back. He’s put himself in a place right now where I imagine there’s a lot of clubs looking at him. He’s still only 22-years-old. He has been outstanding.”
