Real Sociedad’s star player Alexander Sorloth was presented with a massive fish after being named the club’s Most Valuable Player of the Month.

Sorloth scored three goals in four games for Sociedad in January, propelling the club to third place in La Liga, trailing only Real Madrid and Barcelona.

And the hotshot striker, who has eight goals in 16 games this season, was presented with a large fish to commemorate the occasion.

He smiled as he posed with a chef who handed him the enormous sea creature in a basket with fresh herbs. Fans couldn’t help but mock the former Crystal Palace striker on Twitter.

One fan quipped: “Most Valuable Plaice.” Then a second user mused: “1st plaice.” And a third curious supporter asked: “Reckon he made fish pie with it?”

Most English fans will remember Sorloth from his time with Crystal Palace, where he signed for £9 million in 2018. However, he was sold to RB Leipzig in 2020 after scoring just one goal in 20 appearances for Palace.

In 2021, he was loaned to Sociedad, where he rediscovered his scoring boots. But Sorloth isn’t the first player to receive a fish from Sociedad for winning the award.

Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard received the strange award when he won the player of the month award during his loan spell at the club in 2019.

Odegaard awkwardly posed with the water animal as fans snapped photos. He was on loan from Real Madrid at the time, who had signed the midfielder from Stromsgodset Fotball in 2015.
