Karim may wear the German jersey on the pitch, but a part of his heart beats in Nigeria.

In an exclusive chat with Omasports, the football star opened up about the roots of his connection to Nigeria, the foundation he launched there, and the passion that drives him beyond football.

It all started with a dream

“For me, it’s easy to say—I had a dream as a small child,” Karim says, reflecting on the moment that changed his perspective forever. “I visited Lagos and Ibadan with my father, and I remember telling him, ‘When I grow up and have a bit more money, I want to help the people here.’ That’s what I’ve done.”

The foundation he built in Nigeria isn’t just a project—it’s a mission close to his heart. “It’s something for my father and for me. It comes from the heart. I’m happy to help the people, and at the end of the day, I’m also happy to visit always.”

Why not play for Nigeria?

Despite his love for Nigeria, Karim chose to represent Germany on the international stage—an emotional and complex decision.

“It’s a difficult question. You have to also ask my father this question,I’ve had to explain it to my father “ I had offers from Germany and felt good about it. At the end, I chose to play for Germany. That’s just how it happened.”

More than music and food—it’s culture

When asked about Nigerian culture, Karim lights up. “Of course I listen to Nigerian music. Burna Boy is huge, and I really like Asake too. I enjoy the vibe, the energy. Their music is always on my playlist.”

And yes, he eats fufu—with no hesitation. “We all know that,” he says with a laugh.

When will you visit again?

Karim is eager to return, though his schedule is packed. “Maybe in the winter or next summer,” he says. “This year is a bit stressful for everybody—especially with the Club World Cup. But I’ll definitely try to make it.”

JJ Okocha—A Legend Forever

When asked about his favourite Nigerian players, Karim doesn’t hesitate: “All time? JJ Okocha, of course. He was different.”

He also mentions some current stars: Victor Osimhen is also very good. He is one of my best Nigerian players as well.

“Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface has great talents. Nigeria has so many good players. Even the ones who don’t play for the national team—there’s so much potential.”

Can you speak Yoruba?

Karim chuckles at the question. “Not yet,” he says with a smile. “But maybe soon.”

A Heart in Two Worlds

Karim’s journey is proof that love for one’s roots can go beyond national borders. Whether it’s through his foundation, his music playlist, or his childhood memories, Nigeria remains a vital part of his story.

And it’s clear—he’s not just giving back; he’s staying connected.
