Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick is enjoying a remarkable turnaround in his career after enduring a difficult period last season. Following his side’s Champions League victory over Sparta Prague on January 29, Schick spoke about his current form, competition within the squad, and his ambitions for the season.

Bouncing Back from a Difficult Period

Schick, who struggled with injuries and limited playing time last season, is now back to full fitness and delivering standout performances. Reflecting on his journey, the Czech forward admitted that the situation in football can change rapidly.

“Things in football change really quickly. Last season, when I wasn’t playing, I wasn’t happy. But now that I am fit, injury-free, and getting enough playtime, scoring goals, of course, I have to be happy,” he said.

Schick has been in prolific form this season, scoring 14 goals in the league so far, proving to be a key asset for Bayer Leverkusen.

Healthy Competition with Victor Boniface

Schick has had to compete with Nigerian forward Victor Boniface for a place in the starting lineup. Despite the competition, he maintains a professional outlook, focusing on his own performance rather than external factors.

“We push each other. With the number of games we play, it’s impossible to rely on just one striker. I always focus on myself rather than looking left or right. In the end, it’s the coach who decides who plays, but Boniface is a very good player and helps the team a lot,” Schick stated.

When asked if he and Boniface could play together up front, he acknowledged the possibility but deferred the decision to the coaching staff. “I think it would be possible, but that’s up to the coach,” he added.

Thriving Partnership with Nathan Tella

Schick also spoke highly of his partnership with Nathan Tella, who has been in impressive form for Leverkusen. The Czech forward praised Tella’s qualities, particularly his speed and crossing ability.

“Nathan is a great guy. As a football player, he’s very fast and can deliver great crosses into the box. He is in fantastic form right now and is helping us a lot,” Schick said.

Season Ambitions

Regarding his goal target for the season, Schick prefers to take things one game at a time rather than setting a fixed number.

“I never set a specific goal tally for the season. I just go game by game, aiming to score in every match. We still have many games to play, and hopefully, I will score a lot,” he concluded.

With Schick in top form and Bayer Leverkusen pushing for success on multiple fronts, the competition for places in the squad will continue to drive performances. His resurgence comes at the perfect time for Leverkusen as they aim for silverware in both domestic and European competitions.
