Gambian defender Sulayman Marreh has turned down a national team call-up because he thinks it’s unfair to represent the country when you are not at your best.

Marreh signed for Gent in 2020 and was with the club until July 1. He’s been a free agent since then.

”I was called to play for my country but I can’t come because I am not playing currently,’ he said per GamFoot Transfers. “It is not fair to come and play for your country if you are not at your best.

The 27-year-old made his debut for Gambia in 2011 and has 20 appearances and a goal to his name for the West African side.

Marreh was a part of the Gambian team that made a sensational run to the quarterfinals of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations as debutants.
