Joshua Eppiah: Belgian-Born Forward with Nigerian Roots Sets Sights on Super Eagles’ Success.

In an exclusive interview with omasports in Lagos, Nigeria, young forward Joshua Eppiah opened up about his football journey, his Nigerian heritage, and his aspirations to represent the Super Eagles on the international stage. The 24-year-old, currently on loan at Northampton from Leicester, shared his excitement about his time in Nigeria, his career progression, and his love for the vibrant Nigerian culture.

Eppiah, born in Brussels to Nigerian parents, expressed his enthusiasm for visiting Nigeria, saying, “The last time I came to Nigeria was 2012. This is my second time here. But now it’s going to be more frequent. I probably come like every year now. I really like it here.” Clearly, the talented forward’s connection to his roots holds great significance.

Reflecting on his football journey, Eppiah reminisced about his time at Leicester City, where he joined the academy at the tender age of nine. His breakthrough came in the under-18s when he began training with the first team, sharing the pitch with renowned players like Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi. “It was a good experience, obviously, training with the first team, and that’s when my career started for me,” Eppiah revealed.

The ambitious striker-winger has also embarked on loan spells to develop his skills further. “My first loan was in Belgium at Leuven in the first division,” he explained. “And then I came back [to England], and in the second half of the season, I went to Northampton. We were fighting for promotion there but didn’t quite make it. And then this past season, I went there, and we finally got promotion to League One.” Eppiah’s determination to explore new environments echoes a growing trend among English players seeking development opportunities abroad.

Discussing his position on the field, Eppiah described himself as a versatile player, capable of making an impact as both a striker and a winger. This adaptability has been instrumental in his growth as a player, enabling him to contribute effectively to his teams.

When asked about his life and Nigerian heritage, Eppiah disclosed, “I was born in Brussels. I have three sisters. We were born in Belgium, Brussels, and my parents are from Nigeria. My mum is from Delta, and my dad’s from Lagos.” His Nigerian roots are a substantial source of pride, shaping his desire to represent Nigeria in international football.

Regarding his national team allegiance, Eppiah left no room for doubt, expressing his unwavering commitment to the Super Eagles. “I think when I was younger, obviously, I played with the Belgium national team under-21s. But now, 100%, as you say, my parents are from here. This is my fatherland. So I have to 100% stick by Nigeria, and I want to play for Nigeria because Nigeria, individually and as a team, they’re good, and that’s something I want to be part of.”

Beyond football, Eppiah shared his affinity for Nigeria’s vibrant culture. He praised the current weather, relished the local cuisine, and expressed his love for Afrobeat music, with Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid among his favorite artists.
