Man Utd consider giving Cristiano Ronaldo’s No.7 shirt to a teenager for first time in 20 years
Manchester United are reportedly contemplating the possibility of bestowing the prestigious number seven shirt, previously donned by Cristiano Ronaldo, upon young talent Alejandro Garnacho.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Garnacho is being considered as a candidate for the coveted No. 7 jersey. If he were to receive this honor, he would become the first teenager since Ronaldo in 2003 to wear it. The number seven shirt has remained unoccupied since Ronaldo’s departure to Al-Nassr in January, while Garnacho currently sports the number 49.
At just 18 years old, Garnacho has been making impressive strides at Old Trafford. He made his debut in April 2022 and has since accumulated 36 appearances for the club, contributing five goals and five assists. His performances have garnered recognition, as he has been nominated for the esteemed 2023 Golden Boy award.
The number seven shirt holds immense significance at Manchester United, having been worn by legendary figures such as Ronaldo, George Best, Eric Cantona, and David Beckham. However, since Ronaldo’s departure for Real Madrid in 2009, it has proven to be a challenging burden for several players who have followed in his footsteps. Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia, Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay, Alexis Sanchez, and Edinson Cavani are among the six players who have struggled to meet the lofty expectations associated with the number seven shirt during their time at the club.
