Alphonso Davies claims proposed move to Barcelona fell through because he’s Canadian

Alphonso Davies, the talented Bayern Munich player, has recently made a startling revelation, claiming that Barcelona’s president rejected a potential transfer for him solely because of his Canadian nationality.

Despite his remarkable performances and his integral role in Bayern Munich’s success, including five Bundesliga titles and a Champions League triumph in 2020, Davies disclosed during an episode of the Say Less podcast that Barcelona had shown interest in signing him but ultimately dismissed the idea due to his Canadian background.

Davies expressed his disappointment, saying, “Barcelona actually reached out but the president said they didn’t want me. They said they didn’t want me because I was Canadian. I’m not gonna lie, that kind of crushed my feelings a little bit.”

While Davies acknowledged that the media reported this information, he was unable to confirm whether the president had personally made such a statement.

Joan Laporta has held the position of Barcelona president since March 2021, succeeding interim leader Carles Tusquets.

In recent days, Davies’ agent, Nick Huoseh, revealed that he had been engaging with other clubs regarding the player’s future.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich is currently engaged in contract negotiations with the Canadian star, as Davies is contracted to the German champions until 2025.

However, Davies has been facing personal challenges, particularly feelings of loneliness during his time in Munich. He expressed his concerns, stating, “Life as a professional footballer is very cool, no doubt. You can chill and enjoy life, but after training, there’s nothing to do. For me, because I don’t have a family and my girlfriend is not living with me, I’m by myself.”

He further elaborated on his struggles, admitting, “It’s a little bit worrying not having something to do, especially when all your friends have work. I probably have like five friends. I’m a popular loser.”

Davies has showcased his talent in over 106 appearances for Bayern Munich, scoring six goals over the past four years. Additionally, he has represented the Canadian national team with distinction, earning 39 caps and scoring 13 goals.
