Argentina captain Lionel Messi has said he has never in his career thought of his position among the list of the greatest players of all time.
The Argentine was recently awarded the Laureus Sportsman of the Year – an award given to him to honor his contributions to Argentina’s World Cup triumph last year, with his seven goals and three assists hugely contributing to his country’s victory.
” It was not a thought I had throughout my career, no I was not looking for that.”
“The main fact is to be considered among the names of people thinking the greatest ten, five, or three, whoever they want, it’s already crazy. I never played something for that, but obviously, I’m grateful that people think that way. And honestly, I do not give importance to whatever position it is. Said the 7-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Will Messi be regarded as one of the greatest of all time without a World Cup trophy was the debate before Qatar hosted the tournament last year, a debate that has since been laid to rest after Messi captained Argentina to win the trophy.
Diego Maradona, whom Messi replicated his feat by captaining Argentina to a World Cup triumph, never won the Ballon d’Or award, or Brazilian legend Pele with three World Cup trophies never won a Uefa Champions League trophy, but Messi has won everything.
The iconic Argentine is the only player in history to have won the World Cup, the Uefa Champions League trophy, Ballon d’Or, and the FIFA World Cup Golden Ball.
