Record-breaker Kylian Mbappe says playing for PSG is ‘a privilege’

All eyes were on Kylian Mbappe ahead of Paris Saint-Germain’s match against Nantes on Saturday evening, after the forward tied Edinson Cavani for the club’s all-time top scorer with a double against Marseille last week.

It appeared as though Mbappe would have to wait until the team’s trip to Munich on Tuesday to break the record after being denied the chance to reach it from the penalty spot after a VAR intervention.

Les Canaris had rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the first half before Danilo Pereira headed in PSG’s third on the hour mark.

Timothée Pembélé’s interception high up the pitch followed by a cross, changed that, and a quick turn in the box before a rifled shot into the bottom corner secured goal number 201.

Speaking to Canal+ shortly before a ceremony to commemorate the accomplishment at Parc des Princes, Mbappé expressed his pride in reaching the milestone, not least while wearing the captain’s armband:

“In the last five minutes, I wasn’t putting any pressure on myself, I knew I would beat it and I didn’t want to force it. It’s great that the goal came at the end.

“Playing here is a privilege, I’ve improved as a player, I’ve changed a lot. Playing at PSG is special for me. If you told me I would score with the captain’s armband on to break the record, I wouldn’t have believed it.”

“It’s a personal achievement but I’m here for collective achievements. I’d like to thank my teammates, coaches, the management, and the supporters, who’ve given me everything here.

“We’re going to Munich to qualify for the next round, we’re determined and we’ve regained confidence.”

He would later be honored a trophy for breaking the record before delivering a speech to the crowd:

“It’s very special to be here. The last time I was here was to announce I was staying, it’s an honour to be here as the club’s top scorer.”

“It’s a privilege to be a PSG player, to play in this historic shirt, for the biggest club in France.”
