The first round of matches in the final group games of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League was filled with intense and entertaining matches as well as an ugly scene in Paris over an alleged racism by an official.
As earlier reported in our preview there were no special actions in Group E, the standings were already decided. Chelsea were held at home to a 1-1 draw by Russian side Krasnodar while Sevilla won 3-1 away in France against Rennes.
Borussia Dortmund won away at Zenit St. Petersburg to top Group F while Lazio and Club Brugge shared the points with a 2-2 draw. Brugge drops down to the Europa League while Lazio proceeded to the round of 16 as runners-up.
Juventus won Group G after beating Barcelona 3-0 at Camp Nou with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring two penalties. Both finished with 15 points but Juventus boast a better head to head record. Dynamo Kyiv beat Ferencvaros 1-0 to secure the Europa spot.
RB Leipzig stepped Manchester United down to Thursday night football after beating the Red Devils 3-2. United needed only a draw but succumbed to a loss. All hope of staging a late comeback after two goals in two minutes we’re resisted by Leipzig.
The ugly scene came in the match between PSG and Istanbul Basaksehir after the 4th official allegedly abused Basaksehir’s assistant coach Webo racially by calling him “that black guy.” which led to the team walking off after heated exchanges especially by former Chelsea striker Demba Ba. PSG also walked off in solidarity.
UEFA acknowledged the incident and confirmed an investigation will be opened into the case.
The match has now been rescheduled for Wednesday, December 9 at 5:55pm GMT.
