The official bid for hosting the 2030 World Cup has been submitted by Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
One hundred years after the first World Cup was hosted in Montevideo, the South American nations are requesting that the tournament be held “where football was born.”
The host for the 2030 World Cup will be revealed by FIFA next year.
“The 2030 World Cup is not just another World Cup, it deserves a celebration with recognition for 100 years,” said Alejandro Dominguez, South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) president at a ceremony at the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
“We are convinced that FIFA has an obligation to honour the memory of those who came before us and believed in greatness and made the first World Cup.”
AFA president Claudio Tapia added: “As world champions, we carry out this launch which is the dream of all South Americans. Not only on the centenary of the first edition, but because of the passion with which we live football.”
Argentina’s President Alberto Fernandez made a statement on his official Twitter account saying that Bolivia will be asked to join “this dream”.
Uruguay won the maiden edition of the prestigious tournament as host country in 1930, when it was held in the country’s capital, Montevideo.
World champions in 2022 Argentina hosted the event in 1978, while Chile hosted it in 1962.
South American countries will compete against a joint bid from Spain and Portugal, as well as potential bids from Morocco and Saudi Arabia.
