Yeni Matalyaspor, a Turkish second division side, has confirmed the tragic news that their goalkeeper, Ahmet Eyup Turkaslan, has passed away due to the devastating earthquake that has recently hit the country. This news has come as a shock to the team and their fans, who are mourning the loss of their beloved player.
Tragically, more than 5,000 people have lost their lives due to the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the region. Among them was Turkaslan, a 28-year-old man whose life was cut short by the disaster.
A statement from Yeni Matalyaspor read: “Our goalkeeper, Ahmet Eyup Türkaslan, lost his life after being under the collapse of the earthquake. Rest in peace. “We will not forget you, beautiful person.”
Early Monday morning, a catastrophic earthquake swept through Turkey and Syria, leaving behind a trail of destruction and devastation. Many communities were affected by the disaster, with homes and buildings destroyed and lives lost.
It’s also affected the sporting world, with former Premier League star Christian Atsu injured following the disaster.
The former Chelsea and Newcastle winger, who currently plays for Super Lig side Hatayspor, was missing having been caught up in Kahramanmaras, the city in which Hatayspor is based. Along with him, the club’s sporting director, Taner Savut, was also missing.
Mustafa Ozat, Vice President of Hatayspor, has confirmed that Christian Atsu, one of the players involved in the rubble collapse, has been found but is injured. However, the search for fellow player Muhammet Savut is still ongoing.
