Mount’s individual quality decided the game, says Klopp

Mason Mount bursted into space to latch on to a cross field ball from N’golo Kanté, cut in on his right foot and sent a powerful shot past Alisson Becker three minutes from halftime to secure all three points for Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea at Anfield.

The win continues Tuchel’s unbeaten run as Chelsea manager and condemned Liverpool to a fifth straight home loss, the first time in the club’s history and Klopp has highlighted Mount’s individual brilliance as the decisive moment of the match.

“Intense game, tight game, one very decisive moment decided the game – the individual quality of Mason, if you want, in that situation decided the game,” Klopp said after the match.

“It was a ball in behind our last line, cut inside and in the end we don’t defend in the right space because these quality players, they go inside and they want to shoot from there so we don’t have to be on the six-yard box.

“We have to be there where he wants to finish it off. I think we were not there and that’s the goal we conceded, and our situations we didn’t use. That’s pretty much the explanation for the result.”

Chelsea climbed into top four with the win while Liverpool are seventh and see their hopes of Champions League football next season take a massive blow.

Liverpool host another London club Fulham at Anfield on Sunday before heading out to Budapest for their second leg Champions League tie against RB Leipzig while Chelsea host in-form Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals Everton next.
