Nigerian players in Europe (Weekend Recap)

From Emmanuel Dennis to Taiwo Awoniyi we take a look at Nigerians who impressed for their respective clubs across Europe during the weekend.

Emmanuel Dennis

Dennis inspired Watford to a huge 4-1 victory over Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

The 24-year-old forward provided the assist that put the Hornets on the front foot before registering another and then wrapping up a splendid display with a goal of his own. For his efforts, he was named Man of the Match.

Dennis now has four goals and five assists in 11 appearances for Watford this season.

William Troost-Ekong

Nigeria’s vice captain, Troost-Ekong was also in action for Watford against Man United. The 28-year-old was in defence and did enough to help his side to victory before he was taken off in the 64th minute.

Taiwo Awoniyi

Awoniyi kept up his goalscoring form with a goal in Union Berlin’s 2-0 success over rivals Hertha Berlin in the historic Berlin derby in the German Bundesliga on Saturday. The 24-yesr-old forward was in action for 82 minutes before he was replaced by Sheraldo Becker.

Awoniyi, who scored in the 8th minute, now has eight goals in 12 league appearances for Union. He’s the leading goalscorer for Union Berlin, who rose to fifth in the Bundesliga after the win.

David Okereke

Okereke scored the only goal as Venezia beat Bologna 1-0 in the Italian Serie A on Sunday. It was Venezia’s first win over Bologna since 1947.

Okereke was substituted for Israeli midfielder Dor Peretz with ten minutes left on the clock.

Frank Onyeka

Frank Onyeka came on in the 59th minute for Brentford against Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday and made an instant impact. Two minutes after coming on, he forced an own goal which gave Brentford a 3-2 lead.

The game, however, ended in a 3-3 draw.
