Michael Carrick will take temporary charge of Manchester United following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s exit as manager, the club announced.

Solskjaer left his role as manager after Man United’s embarrassing 4-1 defeat at Watford in the Premier League on Saturday.

“Michael Carrick will now take charge of the team for forthcoming games, while the club looks to appoint an interim manager to the end of the season,” United said in a statement.

Carrick, 40, spent 12 years as a player at Manchester United, from 2006 until his retirement in 2018 after which he joined the club’s first team coaching staff.

United’s next game is away at Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday. After the Villarreal trip, United face league games against Chelsea and Arsenal.
