‘You can’t say Salah is the greatest’ – Ayegbeni places Drogba above Liverpool star
Nigerian football legend, Yakubu Ayegbeni says Mohamed Salah has not yet eclipsed Didier Drogba when it comes to being the greatest African in English Premier League history.
Salah’s hat-trick for Liverpool in their recent 5-0 demolition of Manchester United in the Premier League saw him overtake Drogba to become the highest-scoring African in Premier League history with 107 goals.
However, Ayegbeni, who played for Everton and Middlesbrough in the Premier League, doesn’t think the Egyptian is the best African to grace English top-flight football – although he praised the 29-year-old forward for his exploits under Jürgen Klopp.
“You cannot say Salah is the greatest African to play in the Premier League. Drogba was something special because he was scoring for fun,” Ayegbeni told Goal.
“However, you have to give Salah the credit for breaking the big legend’s record, which makes him one of the greatest Africans in the English top-flight, but for now, he is certainly not the greatest.”
“All the same, we have to applaud the Egyptian for his fine form because it is not easy to play the way he is doing right now – which is incredible.”
Salah has registered ten goals and six assists in ten Premier League games for Liverpool so far this season.
