Coup d’etat in Guinea puts Morocco’s World Cup qualifying game under threat
Morocco is scheduled to play Guinea in a World Cup qualifying match at the General Lasana Conte Stadium in Conakry on Monday, but a reported Coup d’etat attempt in the country has threatened the possibility of that game.
Recent reports state that President Alpha Conde’s government has been dissolved by a group of soldiers and that the 83-year-old president has been captured.
The Atlas Lions of Morocco landed in Guinea’s capital, Conakry, earlier in the weekend ahead of their fixture against the National Elephants, but the match has now been thrown into doubt due to security concerns.
Local sources have reported that the Morocco players are safe, although midfielder Sofyan Amrabat posted a video to his Instagram story showing policemen in the streets.
The Atlas Lions have reportedly been instructed to remain indoors at their residence, and not to go close to windows of the property.
Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Football are yet to release a statement on the fate of the fixture.
