Chelsea have won the Champions League on one occasion previously, needing penalties on that night in May 2012 to beat Bayern Munich in the German city.

That historic day came just three months before current club captain Cesar Azpilicueta left Marseille for west London.

And the 31-year-old Spaniard now wants to finish off a topsy-turvy season which saw Thomas Tuchel replace Frank Lampard as boss and eventually Chelsea finishing in the top four with a repeat of the club’s European success nine years ago.

“To get here today is a massive credit to the group. We have been working so hard but we want to make it special and that means winning tomorrow,” he said.

“This season, it had everything. In December we beat Sevilla 4-0, top of the group, top in the league and it was going well. Then we had two months of bad results, change of manager.

“Unfortunately I wasn’t here in 2012. Personally, when I signed for Chelsea I wanted to repeat that. It has taken nine years and now we have this opportunity ahead of us that we want to take.

“We will always fight for everything. In the Premier League we finished fourth and that is not where we want to be. That is the challenge for next season but tomorrow, it means a lot.”

Azpilicueta was surprisingly called up to the Spain squad for Euro2020 and could be heading to the European Championship an European champion.
