Jose Mourinho Returns To Management With AS Roma
Italian side AS Roma has confirmed that Jose Mourinho will take over the managerial role of the club next season with current coach Paulo Fonesca stepping down at the end of the season.
Mourinho was sacked at English side Tottenham last month, six days before the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City which they eventually lost 1-0 under interim boss Ryan Mason.
“The club are delighted to announce an agreement has been reached with Jose Mourinho for him to become our new head coach ahead of the 2021-22 season,” the club statement reads.
“Thank you to the Friedkin family for choosing me to lead this great club and to be part of their vision,” Mourinho said.
“After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma. It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years.
“The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season.
“In the meantime, I wish Paulo Fonseca all the best and I hope the media appreciate that I will only speak further in due course. Daje Roma!”
Mourinho returns to Italy for the first time since leaving Inter Milan in 2010 after winning 2 Serie A, 1 Coppa Italia, 1 Italian supercup and the 2010 Champions League.
He will be part of talkSPORT’s coverage of Euro 2020 this summer.
Roma are currently seventh on the Serie A table, nine points behind sixth placed Lazio who have a game in hand and are unlikely to secure European football next season.
They lost the first leg of the Europa League semi final to Manchester United 6-2. Fonesca will step down at the end of the season after two years.
