We Have Competition In The Striker Role But There’s A Chance For Simy, Says Rohr
Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr is open to giving in form Crotone forward a chance in the Super Eagles but admits it would not be easy because there’s a lot of options in the Eagles striking department.
Simy, who last played for the Super Eagles in 2018 has been in red hot form in Serie A this season. He has scored 19 league goals for Crotone only behind Romelu Lukaku and Cristiano Ronaldo on the scorer chart, which has led to growing calls for him to return to the Eagles fold.
“Simy is a player I know very well,” Rohr told Europa Calcio. “I called him for the World Cup in Russia and he was arriving in my team at the last moment and he participated in some of our games and he was okay.
“Then he played in the second division in Italy and we had other good strikers in good clubs in bigger leagues who were before him but I’m still watching what he’s doing.
“But when you see that we have Osimhen, Iheanacho from Leicester, Onuachu from Genk in Belgium who won the Belgian Cup over the weekend in the same profile like him, very tall, 2m tall and scoring a lot of goals. There’s a big competition.
“We have also Sadiq Umar in Spain, we still have Ighalo who could still come back into our national team. So it’s very difficult to come into this team in this position because we have a lot of good players in the attack.
“We’re following his performances and I think he should play in a bigger club next year so the chances to join us are still there but not easy.”
Crotone currently sits bottom of the Serie A table and could be relegated if they lose their next game against league leaders Inter Milan but with his display this season, a move to another club could be on the card for Simy.
