Kamaru Usman’s Father Watched Him Live For The First Time After 10 Years In Jail

Kamaru Usman knocked out Jorge Masvida in the second round at UFC261 to retain his UFC welterweight title in front of 15,000 UFC fans in Florida.

There was an emotional family moment after the fight. Kamaru was seen hanging his belt around his father’s waist in front of his family. Muhammed Usman has been in jail since 2010 and was released last year.

Why Muhammed Usman Went to Jail

Usman’s family moved to the US when he was eight. His father started a pharmaceutical company and in 2009 he was arrested on the charge of multiple false claims by his ambulance company.

In May 2010, he was convicted of 14 federal charges and sentenced to 15years in jail and a restitution of $1.3m and was released last year February after serving 10 years.

However, according to his son, the current UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, Muhammed committed no crime that should have landed him in prison.

Kamaru Usman opened up about his father’s incarceration for the first time on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast and blamed the justice system of the USA for turning a blind eye towards his father’s innocence because he was an immigrant.

He shared that the real culprits were the paramedics who Muhammed had hired to run his ambulance company. The crimes were committed by them and even after they admitted to the wrongdoing, Muhammed Usman was sentenced to prison for 15 years simply because of his ‘ignorance’.

“…even though the people that were doing the things that were wrong in the company admitted to doing the wrong things. But what the court said is that ‘Oh because you own the company, ignorance is not an excuse, so because of that, we’re going to sentence you to 15 years.” Usman said.

Kamaru began his MMA career in 2012 while his father was already in prison and with the coronavirus pandemic preventing fans entry in UFC matches, Muhammed was only able to watch his son for the first time in a dominant victory over Masvidal.
