The update from the Super Eagles camp this morning that forward Alex Iwobi who tested positive for coronavirus in Benin on Saturday has tested negative in Lagos came with a lot of relief for all Nigerians.

Iwobi sends a heartfelt appreciation to all Nigerians for their overwhelming love and support in a video making rounds on social media. He also thanked his teammates and staff of the Super Eagles.

He acknowledged it was difficult because he wasn’t showing any symptoms and was okay but had to respect CAF and FIFA protocols by isolating because nowadays no one can tell but he’s healthy. “Ready to go for the last game, let’s see if we can stay unbeaten,” he said.

He specially thanked the NFF president Amaju Pinnick who took him as a son and ensured he isolated comfortably. Pinnick shared the efforts he took to ensure Iwobi was moved back to Nigeria on Saturday to isolate.

“Last Saturday was a difficult day for Alex Iwobi & his family, after the news broke that he had tested positive for the COVID-19 virus ahead of the away game against the Squirrels of Benin Republic,” Pinnick tweeted.

“The fear of Iwobi being quarantined was real & worrying, so I took the responsibility of consulting with every relevant authority to get him to travel out of Benin by boat about 7:30pm, to forestall him getting isolated there. And to the glory of God, after further tests in Lagos, it was confirmed that Iwobi was not infected…”

Iwobi has been cleared for today’s game by CAF and would be in contention to start, he was replaced by Henry Onyekuru in the lineup for the game against Benin Republic.
