I dreamt to be one of the best tennis players, says record breaker Djokovic
World number one Novak Djokovic yesterday surpassed Roger Federer’s record of weeks spent as world number one with his 311th week on top of the ATP rankings.
The 18 Grand Slam winner never lost a match in 2020 and ended the year in number one for the sixth time in his career said he dreamt to be one of the best tennis players in the world when he started playing tennis as a kid.
“This achievement (to stand by tennis greats) is something that I dreamt of when I was a kid starting to play tennis. It’s a tribute to the love and commitment to the sport.” Djokovic told NDTV.
Djokovic has had a stellar rivalry with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal over his career, both of whom are ahead of him in number of Grand Slam with 20 each and he reckons they are special in his career.
“Both of these guys have been so special in my career. Hard to pick one of them, because I have always had to compete against both of them as they were so dominant and consistent,” he said.
“They have such different tennis styles and how they behave on the court and off the court, and I have to adjust differently to the both of them. Those two guys are the ones who pushed me to be a better player,” said the 18-time Grand Slam champion.”
Djokovic won his ninth Australian Open in February, a record. He recently announced he has overcome the injury he picked up in Melbourne and will compete in the Miami Open this month.
